This general guide describes standard laboratory practice for reconstituting lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides. It is provided for research reference only.
What You'll Need
- Your lyophilized peptide vial
- Bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) — available in our Supplies category
- A sterile syringe
- Alcohol swabs
Step-by-Step
- 1. Allow the vial to reach room temperature and swab both vial stoppers with alcohol.
- 2. Draw your chosen volume of bacteriostatic water into the syringe (commonly 1–2ml per vial, depending on the concentration required for your research).
- 3. Insert the needle and slowly release the water so it runs down the inner wall of the vial — never directly onto the powder.
- 4. Do not shake. Gently swirl or let it stand until the powder fully dissolves into a clear solution.
Storage After Reconstitution
Store the reconstituted solution refrigerated at 4°C and use within approximately 28 days. Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles and keep away from direct light. Unreconstituted lyophilized vials are stable at −20°C for 24+ months.
Calculating Concentration
Concentration depends on the amount of water used relative to the peptide mass. For example, adding 2ml of water to a 10mg vial yields 5mg/ml. Always calculate according to your specific research protocol.
